Workday Accessibility Interaction Overview

These tips help you navigate the Workday desktop client when you use assistive technology.

Keyboard Shortcuts

  • Use keyboard shortcuts to access common functions within Workday. Example: Use Alt+4 to change the focus to the first button on an available Action Toolbar.

Workday also provides keyboard shortcuts for the Interactive Video Player and Worksheets.

Page Structure

  • Semantic Regions
    • Common regions in Workday:

      • Banner

      • Search

      • Main

      Additional regions include:

      • Navigation containing a list of items

      • Reading with details about navigation items

      • Action Toolbar

      • Error / Warnings

Action Toolbar

  • Action Toolbars display on some business process tasks or dialog boxes. Use buttons on the Action Toolbar as next steps.

Headings

  • Most Workday tasks begin with a Heading (Level 1) that identifies the purpose or business process associated with the task. Workday can also display other heading levels, providing a task with additional structure.

Calendar

  • Workday provides an alternative calendar that you can use instead of the standard calendar. When you focus the browser on the alternative calendar element, you can select the Alternative Calendar View link. The Alternative Calendar View enables you to use links or check boxes when you select calendar dates.

Inbox

  • Use the Inbox left navigation pane region to review the list of all messages. Select a message to load contents in the reading pane region on the right.

User Interaction

  • Errors and Warnings
    • Workday displays an error or warning when you:

      • Enter information outside of an allowed range.

      • Don't complete a required field.

Warning messages, also called Alerts, don't prevent you from completing a task, but you must resolve error messages to complete a task.

When errors occur on grids, fields, and pop ups, Workday identifies them as invalid and displays error text:

      • Under each issue for fields and pop ups.

      • In a panel above the grid, for grids.

When Workday discovers errors, Workday announces the number of issues and directs you to click the View All button to open a pop up that lists all current issues. If an issue occurs within a pop up, Workday displays a collapsible Errors and Warnings panel instead of a View All button. Each field-level issue in the View All pop up and Errors and Warnings panel has a link you can click to:

      1. Close the pop up.

      2. Move your focus to the specific field.

      3. Hear the details about the error or warning.

Errors or warnings not tied to a specific field don't contain a link.
